Edwarde Webre recently featured in an article titled “Worth Taking the Risk?” which was published in Funds Global Asia’s autumn issue.
Edwarde discussed the variable interest equity structure, or VIEs. Certain industries in China, including the internet industry, are heavily regulated and substantial foreign ownership of their assets is either severely limited or prohibited by the Chinese government. As a result, the VIE structure has became a necessity for these companies to list on overseas exchanges.
He commented that while the risks are clearly spelt out in prospectuses, many public investors may not be fully aware of what they are investing their money in.
