Deacons is proud to be sponsors of the winning team ‘Decoding Law’ at the Global Legal Hackathon. Congratulations to the team for their outstanding achievement!

As the only team representing Hong Kong in the #GLH2018 New York final on 21 April, the Decoding Law team was selected as one of the public sector winners among the 14 finalists around the world by a panel of influential judges in this high profile event supported by the likes of Wolters Kluwer, Integra, IBM, Microsoft and Thomson Reuters.

Deacons COO, Andrew Keith, was also invited to be one of the judges in the Hong Kong round of Global Legal Hackathon back in March. “It was a great honour judging. It was so difficult as all the teams had brilliant ideas, well executed using clever coding and cutting-edge tech. Well done to the winners; I hope you develop your app and go on to represent Hong Kong's talent on the global stage at the next round,” Andy quoted in Asian Legal Business.

Decoding Law, which was developed by a team comprising HKU and CUHK law students, together with experienced software developers, data scientists and AI researchers, was selected as the overall winner of the Hong Kong round of the competition in March. Decoding Law is a machine learning powered browser plug-in that helps people, especially unrepresented litigants, to read and understand legislation by breaking down complex legislative drafting into simple language and explaining defined terms.

#GLH2018 is a legal tech development competition that brings together law schools, law firms and in-house departments, legal technology companies, governments, and service providers with the aim of assisting the development of innovative technological solutions for improving the legal industry across the globe.
