The firm’s corporate social responsibility initiative, Deacons Cares, recently featured on Stand by Me, a radio programme on RTHK. Partner Annie Tsoi and former vacation student Stewart Lai went on air to discuss the award-winning “ABCs of Law” programme. They were joined by Carmen Wong from the Hans Andersen Club and Wong Ho Ming, a participant in the outreach programme. The speakers shared their insight and experiences with the host, offering comments on the impact of the “ABCs of Law” from different perspectives making for a lively and entertaining discussion.
“The ABCs of Law” is a Deacons Cares educational programme, designed in conjunction with the Hans Andersen Club, that helps children in Hong Kong develop their knowledge of the justice system and understand their rights and obligations as members of Hong Kong’s community. The workshops commonly use drama and storytelling as effective tools for engaging children.
At the inaugural workshop, “Law and Society,” Deacons’ volunteers performed an interactive story with students and helped them in creating an ideal set of school rules. Children were provided with a learning kit specially designed for this workshop to vote on their favourite rules and discuss the pros and cons of each. Other workshops have focused on “Intellectual Property”, “Contracts” and “Non-discrimination and Equality”.
The “ABCs of Law” programme was recognised earlier this year by industry publication, The Asian Lawyer who awarded Deacons “Citizenship Law Firm of the Year” based on this initiative.
