On Saturday 11 August, Deacons Cares celebrated the 5th anniversary of the “ABCs of Law” programme with community partner, Hans Andersen Club. Hosted at the Innocentre in Kowloon, the special anniversary event saw over 100 local Hong Kong children ranging from 4-11 years old, and their family members attend. They experienced a fun and educational afternoon filled with activities, including storytelling, interactive discussions, photobooths, a cupcake cutting ceremony and games with prizes. The children were particularly excited to see and play with Pepper the Robot!
The real highlight of the day was the interactive drama performed by Deacons’ volunteers which aimed to simplify the concept of intellectual property rights. It was evident that the play was successful as the children were asked throughout the play whether certain situations were deemed acceptable or not, and all children were able to answer correctly.
Deacons Cares has been working with the Hans Andersen Club for the past 5 years, helping grass-root and under-privileged children to develop their knowledge of law and understand their rights and duties as Hong Kong citizens through this unique education programme. The programme covers basic legal concepts such as contractual obligations and intellectual property rights. Through drama, stories, interactive discussions and special learning kits, children are encouraged to participate and express their views.
