Family Law practice update – Feb 2022

Our Family Law practice had a busy February with invitations from Hong Kong Family Law Association, Private Wealth Management Association and Department of Justice to deliver talks relating to how to handle disputes on family wealth in “Grey Divorce” and “Senior Marriages” involving estate complexities and third party interests in family assets.

On 16 February, Sherlynn spoke to over 50 family lawyers and barristers on matters relating to legal capacity to marry, divorce and litigate, relevant legislation and recent judgments in a webinar organised by Hong Kong Family Law Association. On 22 February, she co-delivered another seminar with Joanna Caen, Chairperson of Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Hong Kong on “Family Assets and Aged Wealth Owners” to about 150 members of the Private Wealth Management Association and the banking industry.

Meanwhile, Cecilia was the guest speaker at a seminar hosted by the Department of Justice on “Cross-Border Family Mediation” alongside barrister Eugene Yim and senior partner of PRC firm, Ms Yang Liu on 16 February, just a day after the new mechanism of reciprocal recognition and enforcement of Mainland and Hong Kong judgments in matrimonial and family cases came into operation.

In addition to the talks, the team also wrote an article on the Guideline on Banking Services for Persons with Dementia published on 10 December 2021 by the Hong Kong Association of Banks as part of the Hong Kong Monetary Association and the banking industry’s financial inclusion initiative to promote access to basic banking services by different segments of society. To further promote our Family Law practice, the team will initiate a new FamilyFocus@Deacons series to share information and developments on family related matters. Stay tuned and stay safe.
