Deacons announces four partnership promotions

Hong Kong law firm promotes four new partners, demonstrating the continued growth of their Financial Services and Intellectual Property practice groups

Deacons, Hong Kong’s longest established and largest independent law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of four lawyers to the firm’s partnership, effective from 1st January 2022.

The newly appointed Partners are Joyce Li from the Financial Services group and Emmy Chow, Amy Chung and Loretta Lau from the Intellectual Property (IP) group, thereby strengthening the firm’s core capabilities in the respective areas.

These appointments bring the total number of Partners at Deacons to 56. This announcement further cements the firm’s position as Hong Kong’s largest leading law firm.

Key details of the new Partner appointments:

Joyce Li, Partner, Financial Services

Joyce has extensive experience advising on the establishment of a wide range of funds for Hong Kong retail distribution as well as private offerings in Hong Kong. Her experience includes establishing Hong Kong domiciled unit trusts, Hong Kong open-ended fund companies, Cayman Islands open-ended investment companies and Cayman Islands segregated portfolio companies. Joyce also assists clients in obtaining SFC authorisation for both local and offshore funds and advises on post SFC-authorisation compliance obligations and various regulatory requirements in Hong Kong.

Prior to her current role, she was Vice President of the product and client service team of a leading Mainland Chinese asset manager with a focus on product development and managing product changes and infrastructure during the life cycle of a fund. She speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Emmy Chow, Partner, Intellectual Property

Emmy is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong and England and Wales (non-practising). She has been advising on Hong Kong and international trade mark protection for over 15 years and has extensive experience advising on brand clearance, filing strategy, portfolio management as well as portfolio audit/reviews, prosecution, and contentious trade mark matters such as opposition, invalidation and revocation proceedings, including appeals before the High Court. She also advises on commercial trade mark matters ranging from conducting due diligence in the acquisition of assets/businesses, to negotiating co-existence agreements, and advising on IP aspects in Initial Public Offering (IPO) projects.

Emmy handles the international and regional trade mark portfolios for local and multinational clients (ranging from century-old conglomerates to start-ups) from various sectors including Consumer Goods and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure, Life Sciences and Healthcare, Financial Institutions as well as Insurance. She speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Amy Chung, Partner, Intellectual Property

Amy is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong. She is experienced in advising on IP/IT matters, IP transactions, technology transfers, digital solutions development and commercialisation, IP issues in initial public offering projects, and other IP general commercial and local law compliance issues across various sectors including Consumer Goods and Retail, FinTech, Transportation and Logistics and Technology, Media & Telecom, in a wide spectrum of areas such as personal data protection, advertising, internet, domain names, trade descriptions, consumer protection and licensing. She is also experienced in brand and IP protection and enforcement in Hong Kong, particularly contentious matters involving trade mark, passing off, copyright, company names, domain names, trade secrets and breach of confidence.

Prior to her current role, Amy was a Senior Legal Counsel (with IP/IT specialisation) at one of the largest professional services firms in the world, with considerable experience advising on IP/IT matters, technology ventures, emerging technologies, technology transfers, digital solutions development and commercialisation projects, IT procurement, privacy and data protection, and various general commercial/contract matters. She speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin. 

Loretta Lau, Partner, Intellectual Property

Loretta is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong and England and Wales (non-practising). She has been advising on Hong Kong and international trade mark protection for over 15 years and has extensive experience in trade mark searching and clearance, filing strategy and trade mark prosecution. She handles large international trade mark filing programs and contentious trade mark matters including opposition, invalidation and revocation proceedings, as well as commercial IP matters such as licensing, assignment, security interest and coexistence agreements. Loretta’s practice combines trade mark protection with searching, registering, renewing and transferring domain names.

She works with multinational clients from various sectors including Education, Hospitality and Leisure, Life Sciences and Healthcare, Consumer Goods and Retail, Funds and Investment Management and Technology, Media & Telecom.

Prior to joining Deacons, Loretta worked for the Government in the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department where she advised on policy and copyright issues. She speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
