Patent law 101: Why do you need a patent?

Authored by: Catherine Zheng, Jeffrey McLean and Ian Liu

Intellectual property is one of the most valuable assets of a business. Filing for a patent is an important part of the business process, particularly for start-ups that have a unique invention.

Deacons’ Intellectual Property team created a series of short hand-drawn videos to explain why it’s so important for businesses to have a patent, the steps to consider before filing a patent application, and finally how a patent can help businesses prosper.

In the first of our three part video series, we follow Matt as he learns the hard way about why it’s so critical to get a patent early on, and what the ramifications of choosing not to get a patent could be.
