Franki Cheung relocates to Deacons’ Beijing office

Partner Franki Cheung has relocated to Beijing as the Chief Representative of Deacons’ Beijing Representative Office.

“I will devote most of my time to looking after our clients’ needs in Beijing in the coming years,” Franki said.

As Head of Deacons’ China Practice Group, Franki is responsible for overseeing the management and operation of the China practice of Deacons, being the first foreign law firm in mainland China to have received official approval from the Ministry of Justice to establish three representative offices in China. Deacons’ China offices have won the Asian Legal Business China “Best Hong Kong Law Firm of the Year in the PRC” award six times in the last seven years.

Over the years, Franki has established strong relationships with the high level government departments in Beijing and other government authorities in China. “These solid and extensive relationships with government authorities not only enable us to provide clients with accurate advice on the latest developments in business regulations but also help us to address issues arising in the government approval process in a timely manner,” said Franki who is both a Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Beijing Haidian District and Guangzhou Municipality. He is also a Director of the China Overseas Friendship Association and a Director of the Beijing Chinese Overseas Friendship Association under the auspices of the United Front Work Department of the People’s Republic of China (“PRC”). Franki is also appointed as the Consultant to the Board for International Investment of Guangzhou Municipality.

Acknowledged 11 times as a leading lawyer in the area of China Corporate & M&A in the PRC in Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2001 to 2012 editions inclusive), Franki advises foreign companies on the legal and practical aspects of their investment and business activities in mainland China including equity and contractual joint ventures; wholly foreign-owned enterprises; holding companies; mergers and acquisitions; infrastructure projects; land transactions and real estate development; agency and distributorship arrangements; and tax planning. He also advises on secured and unsecured lending in the PRC, including project financing, real estate financing and syndicated loans.

Franki has also been cited 4 times in recent and current editions of Asia Pacific Legal 500 as a leading lawyer in the area of Dispute Resolution in the PRC. He is a Member of the Panel of Arbitrators of China International Economic & Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), Qingdao Arbitration Commission, Wuhan Arbitration Commission and Guangzhou Arbitration Commission.
